We all work every day with people affected by the war, so we recently learned something very important: how to avoid burnout ourselves and how to support those who are struggling the most. It was a real “workshop on resilience” for the FUND LASKA team.
During the meeting, we discussed how our bodies and minds react to stress—from muscle tension and speech “glitches” to reduced concentration and communication difficulties. We also talked specifically about how the brain functions under stress: why it’s harder for us to understand one another when we’re stressed, and how that affects communication.
But the most important thing was the practice:
how to recover after tough matches
how to set emotional boundaries
how not to “bring” someone else's pain home
and when it's important to ask for support in a timely manner.
There were many heartfelt conversations, real-world examples from the workplace, and simple yet essential tools that can be put to use right away.
This training session wasn't just about helping others—it was also about taking care of yourself. Because you can only help others when you have the strength to do so.
And perhaps the main takeaway of the day: resilience is also a skill, and it can be developed. Thank you to Mercy Corps Ukraine for such valuable support!
