Inclusion begins with understanding

Did you know that in Ukraine, only 16% of people with disabilities have formal employment? By comparison, this figure exceeds 50% in the European Union. That is why it is important not only to talk about inclusion, but also to put it into practice in every programme and initiative.

The FUND LASKA team took part in an online session focused on physical disability, accessibility, and inclusive economic participation.

The training was conducted by the Ukrainian organization Fight For Right, which has been working for nearly 10 years to protect the rights of people with disabilities, promote accessibility, and advance inclusive approaches. The session was led by Yuliia Sachuk, a human rights advocate, disability rights expert, and Head of the organization.

During the session, we discussed why people with disabilities still face barriers when accessing various programmes and opportunities.

Yuliia shared practical steps that can make support programmes more accessible. These include involving people with disabilities in programme design and testing, making communication clear and accessible, providing assistance with applications, clearly communicating inclusive opportunities, and collecting feedback and data to assess how accessible programmes truly are.

For FUND LASKA, trainings like this are an important part of our team’s development. We want our programmes, consultations, and support to be accessible to everyone.

We would like to thank our partners, the international humanitarian organization Mercy Corps Ukraine, for supporting the organization of the event, and Fight For Right / Боротьба за права and Yuliia Sachuk for the valuable discussion and inspiring examples of how to put inclusion into practice in our work.

LASKA FUND implements the program in Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Odesa regions.
